After the popularity of Faces behind Popular Linux Distros , here’s another article about faces behind popular programming language. It’s quite fascinating to become familiar with the faces behind these programming languages, in which we spend hours learning or using it. Although the list may not be comprehensive but it contains almost all the popular programming language used in modern times. So here we go.

PHP

Rasmus Lerdorf (born November 22, 1968 in Qeqertarsuaq, Greenland) is a Danish-Greenlandic programmer and is most notable as the creator of the PHP programming language. He authored the first two versions.

Python

Guido van Rossum is a Dutch computer programmer who is best known as the author of the Python programming language. In the Python community, Van Rossum is known as a “Benevolent Dictator for Life” (BDFL), meaning that he continues to oversee the Python development process, making decisions where necessary.He is currently employed by Google, where he spends half his time working on Python development.

Ruby

Yukihiro Matsumoto (Matsumoto Yukihiro, a.k.a. Matz, born 14 April 1965) is a Japanese computer scientist and software programmer best known as the chief designer of the Ruby programming language and its reference implementation, Matz’s Ruby Interpreter (MRI). He was born in Osaka Prefecture, in western Honshū. According to an interview conducted by Japan Inc., he was a self-taught programmer until the end of high school. He graduated with an information science degree from Tsukuba University, where he associated himself with research departments dealing with programming languages and compilers.

Ruby on Rails

(though Ruby on Rails is an open source web application framework for the Ruby programming language)

David Heinemeier Hansson is a Danish programmer and the creator of the popular Ruby on Rails web development framework and the Instiki wiki. He is also a partner at the web-based software development firm 37signals.

Perl

Larry Wall (born September 27, 1954) is a programmer and author, most widely known for his creation of the Perl programming language in 1987.

JavaScript

Brendan Eich (born 1961) is a computer programmer and creator of the JavaScript programming language. He is the Chief Technology Officer at the Mozilla Corporation.

Have you ever wondered who are the people behind Ubuntu, Debian, Slackware,..? Stop wondering and have a look at faces behind popular Linux Distros.

Ubuntu:

Mark Richard Shuttleworth (born 18 September 1973) is a South African entrepreneur who was the second self-funded space tourist and first African in space.Shuttleworth founded Canonical Ltd. and as of 2008, provides leadership for the Ubuntu operating system.

Debian:

Ian Murdock (born April 28, 1973, in Konstanz, Germany) is the founder of the Debian distribution and Progeny Linux Systems, a commercial Linux company.

Slackware:

Patrick Volkerding (born 1966) is the founder and maintainer of the Slackware operating system. He is the Slackware Benevolent Dictator for Life. Volkerding earned a Bachelor of Science in computer science from Minnesota State University Moorhead in 1993.

MEPIS:

Warren Woodford is a computer industry veteran who is perhaps best known as the developer of MEPIS Linux. From 2002 to 2007, Warren focused on developing MEPIS and building MEPIS related cross-platform applications for Linux and Mac OS, and even Microsoft Windows.

I’ve just downloaded & installed AntiX M8 -test 1, which worked like charmed on my Compaq laptop.

Gnome & Kde are become more & more floated now, do you really need a full Desktop Environment(DE) ? AntiX doesn’t give you any DE, it comes with two Window Manager (WM): FluxBox & IceWM. I prefer Fluxbox (but IceWM maybe be easier). It provides a rich-featured desktop but requires the minimum hardware. Yes, it can run on almost every boxes, so that don’t throw your old compuper away! My laptop is not old, but I love the super-high-speed and Antix seems to be suitable me. A very stable system with lighting speed is AntiX’s target.

AntiX, developed by anticapitalista, is a branch of Mepis(developed by Warren), a debian-based distro (thank God).

Cách cài đặt(full download):

Bạn cần gỡ bỏ bộ OpenOffice đã có(vào Synaptic, search openoffice và chọn remove tất cả)
Down về, giải nén và cài đặt tất cả các gói (*.deb) trong thư mục DEBS bằng lệnh:

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

xvnkb và Hardy

Bộ gõ tiếng việt dường như là 1 đề tài muôn thuở, phiên bản Ubuntu 8.04 mới xvnkb lại gặp trục trặc. Sau 30 phút mày mò, cuối cùng mình cũng làm xvnkb hoạt động được. cách thực hiện rất đơn giản

Đầu tiên bạn kiểm tra xem SCIM có chạy lúc khởi động hay không? (xem thử có biểu tượng bàn phím nhỏ ở khay hệ thống không?) Nếu không có, bạn tiến hành như sau:

Vào System-> Administration -> Language Support và chọn Vietnamese, check vào ô Enable support to enter complex characters. click Apply. Sau đó restart lại sẽ thấy biểu tượng của SCIM .

Và bây giờ hãy làm thí nghiệm nhỏ: chạy xvnkb, mở gedit và gõ thử–> không gõ được tiếng việt. Bây giờ hãy tắt SCIM đi và gõ lại xem–> được roi`

okie, nếu bạn không thích việc tắt mở SCIM như thế, mình đã viết 1 script nhỏ để làm việc đó tự động.

Vào terminal chạy lệnh gedit ~/Documents/xvnkb.sh và copy nội dung sau:

Nếu dùng kiểu vni:

#!/bin/sh
sleep 1 && killall -9 scim-launcher && xvnkb -m=vni -c=utf8 ;

Nếu dùng kiểu telex:

#!/bin/sh
sleep 1 && killall -9 scim-launcher && xvnkb -m=telex -c=utf8 ;

Save lại gõ tiếp lệnh : chmod +x ~/Documents/xvnkb.sh

Okie, bây giờ logout và login và test thử cái script vừa tạo (nằm trong Documents đấy). Nếu chạy tốt thì bây giờ chỉ việc vào System-> Preferences->Sessions và cho nó tự chạy lúc khởi động

Bạn thích MacOS, bạn có nhớ thanh top panel của MacOS có khả năng tự thay đổi tuỳ thuộc chương trình đang chạy?? Thật sự Linux cũng có thể làm được điều này với tiện ích nhỏ Gnome Global Menu

Nếu bạn vẫn chưa hình dung ra thì hãy xem ảnh trong các link bên dưới(hãy chú ý thanh top panel):

Cài đặt:

mở terminal và thực hiện các lệnh sau:

wget http://gnome2-globalmenu.googlecode.com/files/gnome-globalmenu-0.4.2_ubuntu-gusty-svn679.tar.gz

tar zxvf gnome-globalmenu-0.4.2_ubuntu-gusty-svn679.tar.gz

cd gnome-globalmenu

sudo dpkg -i *.deb

gedit ~/.gnomerc

và nhập vào: export GTK_MODULES=libgnomenu

Sau đó bạn hãy bỏ thanh Menu Bar của top panel:click phải chọn Remove From Panel (bạn có thể thay thế bằng Main Menu )

Sau đó click phải vào vùng trống trên panel chọn Add To Panel, tìm Global Menubar, click Add

Logout và Login lại rồi xem thành quả

Chú ý: Do trong giai đoạn phát triển nên 1 số phần mềm không hiển thị tốt trên Global Menu như FireFox, OpenOffice…
